Mobilizing Arab American Women to Reduce Tobacco-Related Harms
We propose a pilot program to help underserved Arab American women and their families in California quit smoking and create smoke-free homes. High smoking rates among Arab American men and widespread waterpipe use highlight the urgent need for targeted tobacco cessation initiatives. However, there are currently no tobacco programs specifically designed for Arab Americans in California.
Our previous project revealed that while many men are interested in quitting, they hesitate to seek treatment, and frequent exposure to other smokers is a major barrier. Meanwhile, women expressed a strong interest in collaborative learning, mutual support, and protecting their children's health. Our Community Advisory Board has actively supported women’s leadership, enabling meetings to shape a structured vision for tobacco prevention.
Building on this foundation, we propose the Commit to Quit program, which will train women leaders in tobacco health science and prevention methods. These leaders will receive support in modifying smoking behaviors at home and in engaging family and community members in tobacco harm prevention strategies.
Our program will include community surveys to assess awareness, smoking behaviors, and smoke exposure. Community Co-PI Abdelhalim brings expertise in community change leadership and deep ties to the Arab American community, while Academic Co-PI Lee provides research and evaluation expertise. With strong community integration through our Advisory Board and ongoing tobacco research initiatives, this program aims to create lasting change.
